Resumo: A thorough reading of the main periodical publications born in the geographical space of the last years of Nueva España and the first years of independent Mexico (1722-1825) has offered us an enriching panorama on the proliferation and acceptance of indigenisms in the Spanish language of this geographical environment. Many are the authors who have insisted on the persistent presence of pre-Hispanic languages in the Spanish of that period of time, but there are few who have focused their attention on the manifestation of words of pre-Hispanic origin in a medium such as the press. It is in this type of channels of linguistic expression, where the researcher can assess the vitality of those terms that were introduced - either to define a new reality, or to record the close contact between Spanish and other linguistic systems-. In this work, we intend to account for the main methodological pitfalls that arise for the linguist when analyzing several languages in contact and assess the repercussions of it in the lexicographical treatment. We will take as an example a set of indigenous terms extracted from the periodic press of the selected period of time and geographical space and we will discuss why they were introduced, we’ll write about the linguistic attitudes that led to their graphic manifestation and we will refer their presence or absence in dictionaries of those years. From the methodological point of view, differences will not only be raised from the textual type (journalistic texts), but also from subtypes of texts (political, literary writings, advertisements, commercial taxonomies...).
