An overview of studies within applied linguistics in Brazilian graduation programs between 2017 and 2020

Resumo: This study aims at investigating recurrent topics and the place of languages in doctoral dissertations and master theses within the area of Applied Linguistics (AL), defended in graduate programs (GP) and evaluated by the Brazilian Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES) with scores six or seven, between the years of 2017 and 2020 in order to unveil the intersections between different areas in AL research. The theoretical background comes from studies that relate AL to other areas of knowledge. As a methodological procedure, we conducted searches for studies that embodied in their titles or keywords the combination of the terms “applied linguistics” in dissertation and thesis databases. The results show that, among the fifteen studies that were researched, most of them prioritized aspects related to the English language as object of study. Moreover, we noticed that some topics, such as Distance Education, Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese as an additional language have gained space in the area of AL.

Moreover, we noticed that some topics, such as Distance Education, Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese as an additional language have gained space in the area of AL. O objetivo deste estudo é investigar os temas recorrentes e o lugar das línguas nas teses e dissertações inseridas na área da Linguística Aplicada (LA) defendidas entre os anos de 2017 e 2020 nos programas de pós-graduação (PPG) avaliados pela Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) com conceito seis ou sete, a fim de desvelar as interseções entre diferentes áreas na pesquisa em LA. O referencial teórico advém de estudos que relacionam a LA com outras áreas do conhecimento. A metodologia consistiu em buscar nos bancos de teses e dissertações todos os trabalhos de pós-graduação defendidos no período mencionado que constassem no seu título ou nas palavras-chave a combinação dos termos “linguística aplicada”. Os resultados demonstram que, entre os quinze trabalhos pesquisados, a maioria deles prioriza as questões relacionadas à língua inglesa como objeto de investigação.
