Resumo: | Our aim is to focus on the strategies of influence developed in political discourse, drawing on the theoretical work by Charaudeau (2005, 2007, 2008). The discourse marked by polemical traces is particularly interesting, while based on dichotomisation and polarisation (AMOSSY, 2010, 2014). This textual/discursive structure often entails the Other’s disqualification and even demonisation, accompanied by (strategic) illocutionary acts characterized by impoliteness within conflictual interactions (KERBRAT-ORECCHIONI, 2017). On the other hand, convincing and persuading are accompanied by emotions (PLANTIN, 2011) within the “contract of communication” and dissent. In fact, discursive pathemisation influences the way interlocutors react. These enunciative and rhetorical features characterize Portuguese political discourse (MARQUES, 2000): discourse at the centre of referendums (GIL, 2018, 2021) concerning sensitive topics is agonistic and, moreover, marked by emotions. It is worth analyzing how in political discourse agonism and verbal violence marry with the projection of a credible and legitimate ethos. |

It is worth analyzing how in political discourse agonism and verbal violence marry with the projection of a credible and legitimate ethos.
