The article investigates the relationship between law and coupism in the context of the final crisis of Vargas second government, in August 1954, focusing on the performance of Udenist jurists. Vargas’ suicide aborted the ongoing plan for his deposition and prevented a breakdown of the constitutional order. It is relevant, however, to understand how the coup against Vargas was legally prepared through arguments and theses that mobilized the field of law. Thus, the work intends to dialogue with studies on the UDN and udenismo and to deepen the understanding of the coupist tendencies in the party, especially among its jurists. In addition to bibliographic research, the method of document analysis is used, selecting parliamentary debates and publications in the press as the main primary sources. In conclusion, it seeks to reflect on how the legal architecture of the coup against Vargas anticipates the forms and strategies of using institutes and codes of law in favor of deviations from legality, which would be successful in 1964.
