Sewing gender: labour process in the Brazilian garment industry

Resumo: The global reorganization of production has significantly impacted the processes and working conditions in the garment industry, one of the most traditional and expressive sectors in the Brazilian industry. Based on extensive field of research and interviews with workers and union leaders, the article highlights the ways in which gender is mobilized in the work processes in this industry and its impacts on women workers. As a labour force composed mostly by women, the meaning of these transformations is strongly marked by the deepening of the precarious working conditions already characteristic of the sector, made possible by a set of mechanisms (old and new) of control and practices of violence based on the sexual division of labor.

Fundamentado em extensa pesquisa de campo e entrevista com trabalhadoras e dirigentes sindicais, o artigo evidencia as formas como o gênero é mobilizado nos processos de trabalho nessa indústria e seus impactos sobre as trabalhadoras.
