“The social question”, hunger, and food and nutritional (in)security in neoliberal Brazil

This article understands hunger as a manifestation of food and nutritional insecurity, it addresses these manifestations, as expressions of the “social question”, and the forms by which the Brazilian State seeks to confronts them. In particular, it analyses hunger, and food and nutritional (in)security, in relation to the dynamics of neoliberalism in the country, especially in the context of recent Far-Right national governments and COVID-19. To this end, it employs bibliographical and documental research, guided by critical social theory based on the Marxist tradition. It presents the causes of these manifestations of the “social question”, their main expressions and the forms of social intervention by the State, taking account of the particularities of different national governments that demonstrated different aspects of neoliberalism, but which preserved its fundamental neoliberal principles.
