My research’s goal is to identify and to describe the modes of representation of the self and the Other in the confrontation between the different models of civilization caused by the “discovery” of the Americas. The research hypothesis takes as its starting point the concept of Sartre that the Other is only accessible to the subject through the look that turns itself into knowledge and becomes the representation of the Other and of itself, reciprocally; and that the look of the Other, when focusing on the subject, makes it possible for the one to see itself and to recognize itself in the way the Other sees it, revealing to the one not only what it is, but also, constituting it, affecting the way one seesitself and the world in which it lives. I take Orlandi as a theoretical counterpoint, that being so that, despite the complicated process of the containment of the senses and asphyxia of the subject, which is the silencing mechanism that characterizes the discourse over the Native Americans, it is possible to use this same mechanism to enable observation asan inside and an out, through the details of these processes of meaning, bringing to light what was muted. In my work, within a comparative perspective, I seek at first to verify the view that the European had of themselves and the inhabitants of the continent discovered and so analyze the discursive ways in which the European represents himself and the Native Americans. Then, I try to trace the hidden Native Americans discourse in European discourse and, through this, the view that the Native Americans had of themselves and of the European invader and their way of representing themselves. Finally, I highlight the speech of half-breeds and Native American authors to represent themselves and the Other.
