Resumo: This study aims to understand how does the participation of middle manager occur in the strategic management of innovation, considering strategy as practice perspective. Middle management is the organizational level that most relates to the other ones, being the link between top management and the operational level. The roles of middle managers are: synthesizing information, championing alternatives, facilitating adaptability and implementing deliberate strategy. In order to reach the goal a qualitative methodology was adopted through a single case study, performed in a technology company. Data collection techniques were semi structured interviews with middle managers and operational employees in the area of ??innovation, document analysis and direct observation. After analyzing the data, which used the pattern matching technique, it was identified that the managers play the four roles in the strategic management of innovation in the company, and middle managers are determinants both in the formulation and in the implementation of innovation strategy, whether they are deliberate or emergent. This research intended to contribute to the studies about middle manager in the organizations and the organization itself could evaluate the role and importance of middle manager in the strategic management of innovation.

A gerência intermediária é a que mais se relaciona com os demais níveis organizacionais, sendo o elo entre a alta direção e o nível operacional. Para alcançar o objetivo foi adotada a metodologia qualitativa por meio de estudo de caso único, realizado em uma empresa de tecnologia. As técnicas de coleta de dados foram entrevistas semiestruturadas, análise de documentos e observação direta. Após a análise dos dados, que utilizou a técnica pattern matching, identificou-se que os gerentes exercem os quatro papéis na gestão estratégica da inovação na empresa, sendo que os gerentes de nível médio são determinantes na formulação e implementação da estratégia de inovação, independente destas serem deliberadas ou emergentes. Os papéis que exercem os gerentes são: sintetizador de informações, defensor de alternativas, facilitador e implementador da estratégia. Esta pesquisa contribuiu para a promoção dos estudos sobre os gerentes de nível médio e sua importância para as organizações.
