PROFESSIONAL IDENTITY AND THE USE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN ORGANIZATIONS BRASIL

Resumo: This article presents a theoretical essay about the professional identity as a conceptual lens to be applied in the understanding of the interaction between individual and information technology (IT) in organizations. The professional identity is discussed as a relevant concept for the studies regarding how individuals redefine the use of IT. The social construction of reality and the role of the user as an agent of the use of IT are assumptions of this essay. It argues that the structure of technology is constructed in practice, when individual characteristics, abilities and objective will influence the use of IT. The concepts of identity and professional identity, and the way they can be measured, are also presented.

Este artigo apresenta uma reflexão teórica sobre a identidade profissional como uma lente conceitual para a compreensão da interação entre os indivíduos e os recurso de tecnologia da informação (TI) nas organizações. A identidade profissional é aqui discutida como conceito relevante para o entendimento da forma pela qual os indivíduos redefinem o uso da tecnologia da informação. A construção social da realidade e a visão do usuário de TI como o agente da utilização da tecnologia são premissas deste ensaio. São debatidas as idéias de que a estrutura da tecnologia é construída na prática e de que as características, habilidades e objetivos pessoais do indivíduo irão influenciar o uso da tecnologia por meio da identidade profissional.
