ABSTRACT: In this article, I focus on the movie M (1931), from Fritz Lang, one of the most importante symbols of the german expressionism aesthetics. Its profetic view is very well known. In fact, M becomes a very deep study about the social control taken by the major dictatorships in 20th century and how it affected the individuals psychologically. At the same time, I talk about how Lang used film techniques to build the city backgroundof M and how its atmosphere does seem very opressive to the way people can live their own lives. In the end, I propose that we can find resonances from M in our post-modern societies, especially in what concerns to the increase of public video surveillance and television reality shows.KEY WORDS: Film – German Expressionism – Totalitarianism – Germany – Nazism –Power – Social Control – “Big Brother”. |
