Resumo: In this article, we present the ethnographic material and our interpretations about the meanings that people deprived of liberty in the Federal District of Brazil give to their everyday experiences, particularly attentive to the local meanings of the category paying time. Based on field material, we argue that paying time marks an idea of moral responsibility that allows interlocutors to reposition themselves as moral beings who not only owe a debt to society – or God –, but are also worthy people with rights. Sur la base de nos données de recherche, nous soutenons que payer une pénalité marque une idée de responsabilité morale qui permet aux interlocuteurs de se repositionner en tant qu’êtres moraux qui non seulement ont une dette envers la société - ou Dieu - mais sont également des personnes dignes titulaires des droits.
