Monitoring the 2022 Brazilian elections: platform affordances of YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Facebook and the uses in digital campaigns

Resumo: In this paper, we discuss the results of monitoring the 2022 Brazilian elections on YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter/X and Facebook platforms based on the affordances present in each of them. Based on the bibliographic review, we propose a typology of affordances, classifying them according to their application in political campaigns and information flows. Next, we present the methodological procedures for the collection carried out, observing the affordances visible in the algorithmic architecture of the platforms. By analyzing the data, we identify and discuss the affordances on each platform and the ways in which they link with political content. We conclude by pointing out how the specific strategies are configured for each environment, in addition to highlighting the construction of a broader narrative, woven by a wider range of actors, in which the platforms participate in different ways in its composition.

A partir de la revisión bibliográfica, proponemos una tipología de affordances, clasificándolas según su aplicación en campañas políticas y flujos de información. A continuación, presentamos los procedimientos metodológicos para la recolección realizada, observando las affordances visibles en la arquitectura algorítmica de las plataformas. Al analizar los datos, identificamos y discutimos las posibilidades de cada plataforma y las formas en que se vinculan con el contenido político. Concluimos señalando cómo se configuran las estrategias específicas para cada entorno, además de resaltar la construcción de una narrativa más amplia, tejida por un abanico más amplio de actores, en la que las plataformas participan de diferentes maneras en su composición.Neste artigo, discutimos os resultados do monitoramento das eleições brasileiras de 2022 nas plataformas You Tube, Instagram, Tik Tok, Twitter/X e Facebook, a partir das affordances presentes em cada uma delas. Com base na revisão bibliográfica, propomos uma tipologia de affordances, classificando-as de acordo com sua aplicação em campanhas e fluxos de informações políticas. Em seguida, apresentamos os procedimentos metodológicos da coleta realizada, observando as affordances visíveis na arquitetura algorítmica das plataformas.
