Resumo: This article presents an analysis of the denaturalization of the Costa and Bigossi channels inserted in an environment of intense urbanization process in the municipality of Vila Velha, state of Espírito Santo - Brazil. In order to identify the extent and impact of changes caused to the river bed and the floodplain, it was considered to carry out a historical survey of the growth vectors of the city in the basin, the morphology of the channels and the occurrence of floods. The results evidenced the growth and densification of the urban area in the drainage basin in the last five decades, evidencing total denaturalization of the bed in a rectified river course, marked by the waterproofing of concrete, asphalt, and covered sections, considerably expanding flood areas in important corridors roads.

Para identificar la extensión e impacto de los cambios provocados en el cauce y en la llanura aluvial, se partió de un relevamiento histórico de los vectores de crecimiento de la ciudad en la cuenca, la morfología de los cauces y la ocurrencia de las inundaciones. Los resultados mostraron el crecimiento y densidad del área urbana del municipio en la cuenca hidrográfica en las últimas cinco décadas, con una desnaturalización total en un curso de río rectificado, marcado por la impermeabilización de concreto y asfalto ampliando considerablemente las áreas inundables.Este artigo apresenta uma análise da desnaturalização dos canais da Costa e Bigossi inseridos em um ambiente de intenso processo de urbanização no município de Vila Velha, estado do Espírito Santo. A fim de identificar a extensão e o impacto das modificações causadas no leito e na planície de inundação, partiu-se com um levantamento histórico dos vetores de crescimento da cidade na bacia, a morfologia dos canais e a ocorrência das inundações.
