The work was done in São Lourenço stream watershed, Nova Friburgo, RJ. It covers a portion of Três Picos State Park and of the Caledonia Municipal Environmental Protection Area. The area has the growing land demand for agricultural production, which presses for the occupation of slopes, riparian forests and protected areas, causing several environmental problems. The main objective was to compare the current land use with the constraints determined by the environmental law and also to identify possible options according to the land owner s view. It was produced a land use map (crops, pastures forests, rock outcrops), covering also the protected areas, the limitations according to the environmental law, and a digital terrain model (relief map). A questionnaire was applied to the farmers to identify their knowledge of the law, and their personal view about its implications in relation to the agriculture production and the conservation of riparian forests. The results show that forests above 1300m of altitude, and also that land use is compatible with conservation areas management. The main problem found was the agriculture use of the riparian areas along the stream edges. The farmers know about the need to conserve those areas, according to the law. Nevertheless, in their opinion, they would maintain a riparian forest buffer with 9 m of width on both margins, instead of the 30 m width established by the forest code.
