This dissertation presents the analysis of the current stage of the environmental control of seismic surveys for oil and natural gas prospection in Brazil. The activity is present in the country since the end of 1930s, but concerns about its environmental impacts has become more evident over the past 10 years due to environmental permitting requirements of the institution of the Law of Environmental Crimes (Law 9.605/98). Considering the great importance of the seismic for the hydrocarbons exploration and production and the vast dimensions of the Brazilian onshore sedimentary basins, it is natural that the discussion about activity s interference level into the environment requires an appropriate analysis. Through a vast activity s description and the historical rescue of the technology and of the Brazilian regulatory evolution for its execution, the research discusses the necessity and rigidity of its environmental permitting on the basis of the impacts of the activity, its temporary character and the measures of control currently in practice by companies. The work ratifies an important gap left in the legal framework to date: the lack of a specific federal regulation for onshore seismic surveys. In light of this, the licensing of this activity, permitting under the responsibility of states has different requirements and procedures, which impact directly on costs and deadlines for compliance with goals of oil companies with the regulatory agency's activity. The recent regulations implemented in Minas Gerais are taken as an important example for future improvements in the procedures for environmental licensing of onshore seismic surveys activities in Brazil. The study thus aims to make the process less time consuming, more objective and based on technical criteria that effectively result in the protection and preservation of the environment.
