This dissertation is a study of detective novels produced by contemporary authors of different ethnic and cultural origins, marginal to the hegemonic center of power. The author discusses these works as counter-discursive narratives, focusing on the paths these writers have taken in re-reading this genre of mass literature, pointing out that detective novels produced in the periphery take a counterhegemonic position in relation to traditional detective fiction. The guideline to this research was the idea that the detective s real object of investigation in the selected body of works would not be the crime presented in the plot this is seen, rather, as a pretext to investigate contemporary society, the role performed by marginalized communities, and how power relations are established in these societies in late modernity, with the aim of leading to a reflection about the role of the Other, representative of the periphery, in relation to the hegemonic center.
