Resumo: Through historical research, this work looks into an educational experience developed in the city of Campos/RJ, during the first republican period, at the Model School "Seis de Março". This public school was at work from 1916 till 1932 appended to the Teaching School of Campos and it was intended to the practical training of teachers. The research tries to retrieve written reports of teachers and directors, frequency maps of students and staff, minutes of state inspectors, official letters exchanged, written accounts of materials used in practical training, programmes of methodology, among other sources, which qualify any important collection from the point of view of a regional education history. This text, an academic dissertation submitted for mastership degree, focuses the project of ' model schools' in its local colours, without ignoring the multifarious influences coming from other regions, particularly those set up in the State of São Paulo, by the end of the XIX and the beginning of the XX centuries. In order to accomplish this, it was necessary to study the elementary schooling process in the State of Rio de Janeiro, and the institutionalization of Teaching Schools in the western countries. Restore part of the culture of this singular Model School "Seis de Março", within the experience of the Teaching School of Campos, its spaces, times, curriculums, educational actors, as well as the contributions of the local intelligentsia in its implementation, is the target of this research, meant to contribute to the history of Brazilian Education, and in a special way to reassess a pioneer pedagogical experience in the education of teachers in a interior town of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

Essa escola, pública, funcionou de 1916 a 1932, como escola anexa à Escola Normal de Campos, e destinava-se à formação prática de professores. A pesquisa tomou como fontes privilegiadas Relatórios de Professoras e Diretoras, Mapas de Freqüência de Corpo Docente e Auxiliar, Termos de Visita de Inspetores Estaduais, Correspondências oficiais, registros de material utilizado nas aulas de Prática de Ensino, Programas da Disciplina Metodologia, dentre outros documentos, que caracterizam um acervo importante do ponto de vista da história da educação regional. Pretende-se, com a presente dissertação- apresentada como requisito acadêmico- focalizar o projeto escolas-modelo , tanto na especificidade própria da versão campista , quanto entendido como parte das experiências que caracterizaram o período, em especial o modelo praticado no Estado de São Paulo em fins do Século XIX, início do XX. Para tal, necessário se fez estudar o processo de escolarização primária, fluminense, no período, e o de institucionalização das Escolas Normais, no Ocidente.
