Resumo: | The present work discusses two novels written by women in the 19th century Who would have thought it? (1872) by María Amparo Ruiz de Burton and The Californians(1898) by Gertrude Atherton and proposes to approach these works as transgressive examples of the traditional sentimental novel of that time. In the analysis of these works, I seek to argue that both novels present critiques of U.S. society which distinguish them from the typical nineteenth-century Anglo American sentimental novel, in that they can be read as counterdiscursive narratives. In order to lay down a solid basis for this study, I have used the works of critics who discuss the genre of the novel, as well as the works of scholars specializing in history and culture. In this way, I have tried to promote productive dialogues between literature, society and culture. |
