The goal of this study is to investigate the possibility of construction of citizenship for social inclusion of the mad through the directives proposed by the brazilian psychiatric reformation. We propose to problematize the relationship between two complex and apparently contradicting fields, madness and citizenship, by the experience on Lima Barreto Psychosocial Attention Center - CAPS, located in the western zone of Rio de Janeiro City, Brazil. This investigation used semi-structured individual interviews and participating observation as data collection instruments. In all, eleven people were interviewed, six of them were professionals and five of them were users. The findings of this research revealed the need of enlargement of the socials meanings both to citizenship and madness in order to an effective interaction between it. Another issue disclosed by this study suggests that, for the mad, the most important point is not necessarily his/her insertion in the traditional citizenship statute, but his/her social inclusion and acknowledgement.
