The occupational safety area in an energy company has made great advances in the managing of Safety, Environment and Health. This progress is reflected on the reduction of accidents that occur while performing activities. However, when we talk about major accidents, for instance, the ones that are caused by the loss of containment (mainly leakage) of chemicals and / or other hazardous products, we notice that companies still do not have the same concern in treating this type of occurrence.The objective of this study is to conduct a critical analysis of the application of the technique of Risk Based Safety Process (RBPS) in an energy company. As a methodological approach, the study can be classified as exploratory, bibliographic, qualitative and applied, supported by bibliographic research and survey. To analyze the data, we combined the data obtained in the diagnosis of the safety process performed in the business area under study and the analysis of occurrences of the safety process with a survey. The findings suggest that the guidelines for operation and maintenance, now in effect in the management company model, seems to be difficult to understand, once it involves two great themes and is a very general guideline, and, therefore, its implementation does not occur in its entirety. It was also observed that the structure of the Safety Process in the business area under consideration has been given in the past 5 years. Concerning the degree of importance of the elements that make a system of Safety Process Management, it appears that the areas / activities of the company already structured in the study were better evaluated, such as the area of reliability, integrity and operational procedures
