The collection of Eighteenth-Century grammars in the library of the Normal School of São Paulo

The subject of this article is the collection of grammars published until 1900 in the library of the Escola Normal de São Paulo, dedicated to the training of teachers. The focus is on the analysis of the theoretical-methodological basis used for the linguistic description, the pedagogical elements and the transnational aspects of the grammars. It also examines the relationship between the collection and the manuals used in the subject of Portuguese in school between 1875 and 1900. The documentary sources consulted are varied and consider all those related to the library’s collection, such as: reports of the school’s director, community minutes, correspondence, newspaper archives, the catalog prepared in 1976 on the occasion of the donation of the library to FE-USP and, finally, the grammars of the collection itself.
