Resumo: Connecting the several meanings of the word “note” that express the idea of value to the statement made by Raul Brandão that his travel book As Ilhas Desconhecidas (1926) is mainly written through “travel notes”, this essay is focused on a careful reading of all the implications of the theme of economy along the two first chapters of that Brandão’s book. Those implications are analysed in a frame of thought that asserts, against Foucault, that the articulation linking literature to anthropology is crucial for any definition of modernity.
