The meaning of care for elderly individuals aged 80 years or older

Resumo: | http://dx.doi.org/10.5216/ree.v14i2.13176This qualitative study was performed in the light of Martin Heidegger’s phenomenology, with the objective to understand the meaning of care for elderly individuals aged 80 years or older. Participants were 16 elderly individuals older than 80 years, of both genders, members of a Community Center located in Salvador-BA. The participants’ discourses were collected from January-March, 2009. The following themes emerged from the discourses: 1) Experiencing self-care; 2) Understanding the need for care from others; and 3) Experiencing being cared by others. The themes allowed the construction of the Meaning Unit: care is present among the ways of being among elderly individuals aged 80 years or older. In conclusion, considering the new Brazilian aging panorama, nursing care should focus not only on health recovery and rehabilitation, but also on the promotion and prevention of complications founded on health education, respecting individuals’ independence and encouraging participation in the care process. |

Objetivó comprender el significado del cuidado en el anciano de 80 o más años. Realizada con 16 ancianos con más de 80 años, de ambos sexos, integrantes de un Centro de Convivencia de Salvador-BA. Testimonios recogidos entre enero y marzo de 2009. De los discursos emergieron las temáticas: 1. Experimentando el propio cuidado; 2. Comprendiendo la necesidad de cuidado del otro; 3. Experimentando ser cuidado por el otro; posibilitándose la construcción de la Unidad de Significado: en los modos de ser del anciano de 80 o más años, el cuidado está presente. Concluimos en que, frente al nuevo panorama del envejecimiento en Brasil, la enfermería podrá enfocar sus acciones tanto en la recuperación y rehabilitación de la salud, como también actuar en promoción y prevención de agravamientos pautados en la educación sanitaria, respetando su independencia, permitiendo la participación en el proceso de cuidado.http://dx.doi.org/10.5216/ree.v14i2.13176Este estudo trata-se de pesquisa qualitativa, à luz da fenomenologia de Heidegger que objetivou compreender o significado do cuidado no idoso de 80 anos ou mais. Foi realizado com dezesseis idosos, ambos os sexos, integrantes de um Centro de Convivência, em Salvador-BA. A coleta dos depoimentos aconteceu entre janeiro e março de 2009. Obtiveram-se as seguintes temáticas: 1. Vivenciando o cuidado de si; 2. Compreendendo a necessidade de cuidado do outro; 3. Experimentando ser cuidado pelo outro, possibilitando a construção da Unidade de Significado: nos modos de ser do idoso de 80 anos ou mais, o cuidado está presente. Conclui-se que, frente ao novo panorama do envelhecimento no Brasil, a enfermagem poderá focar suas ações não só na recuperação e reabilitação da saúde, como também na promoção e prevenção de agravos pautados na educação em saúde, respeitando a independência e permeando com sua participação o processo de cuidado.
