Network and social support of families of children with chronic conditions

Resumo: doi: 10.5216/ree.v12i3.7566Chronic illness in childhood modifies the family dynamics. This research aimed to identify the social network and the kinds of social support, assessing the links supporters, from the families of children with chronic conditions. It was developed a descriptive-exploratory study, with a qualitative approach, based on the testimony of families residing in the city of Joao Pessoa/ Paraíba. The production of the empirical material occurred from November of 2008 to January of 2009 from the semi-structured interviews, participant observation and the construction of the eco-map. In the analysis we obtained data that were grouped in category: identification of network and social support to the family. The results reveal that social networking is a source of strengthening for family and child overcome adversity perspectives related to chronic disease. The family has few connections with the community and their social networks and support is formed by hospital care, financial/material support, companions of hospitalized children and spiritual support. It was revealed that the basic attention is not prepared to accompany these children. Recognising the family as active subject in the care for children with chronic conditions is fundamental, because when a partnership is established with the family, open up opportunities to listen and acceptance for production of shared care and the possibility of building networks and social support confronting the chronic condition in childhood. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar la red social y los tipos de apoyo social, evaluar las relaciones de apoyo, desde la perspectiva de las familias de niños con enfermedad crónica. Se delineó un estudio descriptivo y exploratorio, de alta calidad, basado en el relato de tres familias que viven en la ciudad de João Pessoa - Paraíba. La producción del material original fue elaborada de noviembre de 2008 a enero de 2009 en una entrevista semi-estructurada, de la observación participativa y de la construcción de un eco-mapa. En el análisis se obtuvieron datos que fueron agrupados en una única categoría denominada: Identificación de la red de apoyo social a la familia. Los resultados señalan que la red de apoyo social es fuente del fortalecimiento para que la familia y sus hijos superen las adversidades relacionadas con la enfermedad crónica. La familia tiene poco relacionamiento con la comunidad y su red de apoyo social aunque reciben una formación para asistencia hospitalaria, apoyo financiero/material, acompañamiento para los niños hospitalizados y apoyo espiritual. Se debe reconocer a la familia como sujeto activo en el cuidado del niño con enfermedad crónica esto es fundamental, pues al establecer la colaboración de la familia, se abren espacios para oír y ser oídos, así como también la producción compartida del cuidado y la posibilidad de construir nuevas redes de apoyo social necesarias para enfrentar estas condiciones en los niños y las familias portadores de enfermedades crónicas. Na análise obtiveram-se dados que foram agrupados na categoria: identificação da rede e do apoio social à família. Os resultados apontam que a rede social é fonte de fortalecimento para a família e criança superarem adversidades relacionadas à doença crônica. A família tem poucas conexões com a comunidade e sua rede e apoio social são formados pela assistência hospitalar, acompanhantes de outras crianças hospitalizadas e apoio espiritual. Reconhecer a família como sujeito ativo no cuidado à criança em condição crônica é fundamental, pois ao estabelecer parceria com a família, abrem-se espaços de escuta e acolhida para produção compartilhada do cuidado e a possibilidade de construção de redes e apoio social necessários para o enfrentamento da condição crônica na infância.
