The reasons for successful exclusive breastfeeding from the parents’ perspective

Resumo: doi: 10.5216/ree.v15i2.16996 - http://dx.doi.org/10.5216/ree.v15i2.16996 ABSTRACT The objective of this descriptive, exploratory, qualitative study was to understand the reasons that parents assign to successful exclusive breastfeeding of their child during six months of life. Subjects were eight couples, whose children received exclusive breastfeeding until the age of six months, ages between seven and twenty months, followed in a childcare outpatient clinic of a Teaching Hospital in Recife, in the state of Pernambuco. The information obtained through semi-structured interviews were submitted to thematic content analysis and interpreted under the light of the Social Representations Theory. The analysis revealed four themes: facing obstacles guided by persistency, satisfaction and the advantages of breastfeeding; wanting to breastfeed; support from God and social; effective participation of the father. Breast milk was reports as being the best food during the first six months of life. Women’s positive support from the social network and her wish to breastfeed are what lead to successful exclusive breastfeeding. Descriptors: Breast Feeding; Parents; Qualitative Research; Nursing.

Informaciones obtenidas de ocho parejas en entrevistas semiestructuradas, sus hijos fueron exclusivamente amamantados hasta el sexto mes de vida, con edad de siete a veinte meses, en seguimiento ambulatorio de puericultura de Hospital Escuela de Recife-PE. Las entrevistas fueron sometidas a análisis de contenido temático e interpretadas según constructos de la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales. Emergieron cuatro temas: enfrentamiento de obstáculos orientado por la persistencia; satisfacción y ventajas de la lactancia; querer amamantar; soporte Divino y de la red social; participación efectiva del padre. La leche materna fue considerada el mejor alimento durante los primeros seis meses de vida. El apoyo positivo de la red social de la mujer y su voluntad de amamantar condujeron al éxito practicando la lactancia exclusiva. As informações obtidas das entrevistas semiestruturadas com oito casais, cujos filhos foram amamentados exclusivamente até o sexto mês de vida, com idade entre sete e vinte meses, acompanhados no ambulatório de puericultura de um Hospital Escola, em Recife-PE, foram submetidas à análise de conteúdo temática e interpretadas à luz dos constructos da teoria das Representações Sociais. Desta análise emergiram quatro temas: enfrentamento dos obstáculos norteado pela persistência, satisfação e vantagens da amamentação; o querer amamentar; suporte Divino e da rede social; participação efetiva do pai. O leite materno foi representado como o melhor alimento durante os primeiros seis meses de vida da criança. O apoio positivo da rede social da mulher e o seu querer em amamentar direcionaram o sucesso da prática da amamentação exclusiva.
