Knowing the breastfeeding experiences of Brazilian children that attend elementary school

Resumo: This is a cross-sectional study that aims to know about the experiences of breastfeeding, from Brazilian children studying the 4o and 5o grade of elementary school. Research developed from September/2010 to February/2011, with 1800 Brazilian children in public schools of three cities in Sao Paulo state, using a questionnaire. Although mostly (90,2%) knew that has been breastfed, not all Brazilian families enjoy moments of coexistence to show breastfeeding as natural for children, and the use of pacifier is cultural. When the children plays, they incorporate tools that stimulate feeding and even express dislike when women breastfeed on public places. Not all the children knew that breast milk is the best food for babies, and have misconceptions about it and its advantages. The results suggest that it is urgently needed to implementation of educational breastfeeding promotion policies. Descriptors: Breastfeeding; Child; Knowledge; Attitude; Health promotion.

Descriptors: Breastfeeding; Child; Knowledge; Attitude; Health promotion.Estudio descriptivo, transversal, cuyo objetivo fue conocer experiencias con el proceso de amamantamiento por medio de niños brasileños cursando el 4º y 5º grado de Educación Fundamental. Investigación desarrollada de setiembre/2010 y hebrero/2011, con 1800 niños brasileños en escuelas públicas de la provincia de São Paulo, utilizándose un cuestionario. Aunque la mayor parte (90,2%) sabía que fuera amamantada, no todas las familias disfrutaron momentos de convivio para mostrar la lactancia como algo natural a los niños y el uso de la chupete es una práctica arraigada en esta cultura. En los juegos, los niños incorporan herramientas que estimulan la alimentación artificial y también manifestaran que no gustan ver las mujeres amamantando en Lacalle. No todos los niños sabían que el leche materno es el mejor alimento para los bebés, tienen conceptos erróneos acerca de esto asunto e ignorancia generalizada sobre las ventajas de la lactancia materna. Los resultados sugieren implementación urgente de medidas educativas y de promoción de la lactancia entre los niños. Descriptores: Lactancia materna; Niño; Conocimiento; Actitud; Promoción de la salud.Estudo descritivo, transversal, cujo objetivo foi conhecer experiências com o processo de amamentação por crianças brasileiras que cursam 4º e 5º anos do Ensino Fundamental. Pesquisa realizada entre setembro/2010 e fevereiro/2011, com 1800 crianças brasileiras de escolas públicas de três municípios do interior Paulista, utilizando-se questionário. Embora a maioria (90,2%) soubesse ter sido amamentada, nem sempre as famílias brasileiras aproveitam momentos de convivência para mostrar a amamentação de forma natural às crianças, e o uso de chupeta é uma prática enraizada nessa cultura. Nas brincadeiras as crianças incorporam utensílios que estimulam a alimentação artificial e ainda manifestaram não gostar de passar na rua e ver mulheres amamentando. Nem todas as crianças sabiam que leite materno é o melhor alimento para bebês, tem falsos conceitos sobre o assunto e grande desconhecimento sobre vantagens da amamentação. Os resultados sugerem que implementar medidas educativas e promotoras da amamentação junto das crianças é urgente.
