Health education: an approach on first aid in public schools in inner of São Paulo

Resumo: Population´s lack of knowledge brings about many problems, such as incorrect care of victims and the sporadic unnecessary call for emergency help. The aim of this study was to identify the knowledge level of teachers and workers in elementary and middle municipal schools of São Paulo State, before and after the first-aid training. The study was carried out in four municipal public schools which offer elementary and middle teaching, in the countryside of São Paulo state, from August to October, 2006.Data were collected through a questionnaire applied before and after the teachers and workers´ training. By means of descriptive statistical analysis, it was possible to detect that, in the pre-training stage, only 27, 75% of volunteers showed good knowledge on the assistance of fainting and nosebleed cases. About convulsion, external hemorrhage and dental avulsion, most of teachers and workers (61, 43%), wouldn´t have acted correctly. After training, participants showed they would have an adequate reaction in first-aid situations. It was concluded that the training of first-aid basic principles in schools is extremely important to minimize the damage caused by incorrect victim´s care and lack of immediate help.

Nuestro objetivo fue identificar el nivel de conocimiento de los profesores y empleados de las escuelas municipales de enseñanza fundamental, antes y después del entrenamiento de primeros socorros. El estudio fue realizado en cuatro escuelas públicas municipales que ofrecen enseñanza fundamental en el interior de São Paulo, en el período de agosto a octubre, 2006.  Para la colecta de datos fue elaborado un cuestionario, siendo aplicado antes y después del entrenamiento a los profesores y empleados de las escuelas en estudio. A través del análisis estadístico descriptivo, se verificó que, en el pre-entrenamiento, solo 27,75% de los voluntarios demostraran un buen conocimiento para la realización de atención a los casos de desmayo y sangramiento nasal. Ya frente a las situaciones de convulsión, hemorragia externa y avulsión dental, 61,43% no tendrían la conducta correcta. Tras el entrenamiento, se observó el aprendizaje de los participantes teniendo en vista que la mayoría demostró un conocimiento adecuado de las situaciones de primeros socorros. Se concluye que el entrenamiento sobre principios básicos de primeros socorros en las escuelas es de fundamental importancia para minimizar daños advenidos de la incorrecta manipulación de la víctima y de la falta de socorro inmediato.A falta de conhecimento da população acarreta inúmeros problemas, como a manipulação incorreta da vítima e a solicitação às vezes desnecessária do socorro especializado em emergência. O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar o nível de conhecimento dos professores e funcionários das escolas municipais de ensino fundamental, pré e pós-treinamento de primeiros socorros. O estudo foi realizado em quatro escolas públicas municipais que oferecem ensino fundamental, no interior de São Paulo, no período de agosto a outubro de 2006. Para a coleta de dados foi elaborado questionário, sendo aplicado antes e após treinamento aos professores e funcionários das escolas em estudo. Através da análise estatística descritiva, verificou-se que, no pré-treinamento, apenas 27,75% dos voluntários demonstraram um bom conhecimento para a realização de atendimento aos casos de: desmaio e sangramento nasal, já frente às situações de convulsão, hemorragia externa e avulsão dental, 61,43% não tomariam a conduta correta. Após o treinamento, observou-se o aprendizado dos participantes, tendo em vista que a maioria demonstrou adequado conhecimento frente às situações de primeiros socorros.
