Perfil sociodemográfico e fatores associados à gravidez na adolescência em Goiás

Adolescent pregnancy is a multifactorial event that needs to be analyzed within different sociocultural and biological contexts. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and to investigate social, demographic and behavioral factors associated with pregnancy among adolescents in Goiás State. METHODOLOGY: It is a cross-sectional study. We used the database records of Projeto Adolescer com Saúde, a research project conducted in four cities of Goiás State: Goiânia, (2002 to 2003) and Ceres, Catalão and Inhumas (2007 to 2009), at public health units (Family Health Program). The two databases were standardized and merged: Goiânia (n = 468) and other cities (n = 969), resulting in a sample of 1437 female participants, being selected 1036 adolescents from 15 to 19 years old. Adolescents with history of pregnancy were compared to those who did not become pregnant to identify the factors associated with pregnancy. Univariate and Multivariate not conditional analysis was performed to investigate socio demographic variables potentially associated with adolescent pregnancy, calculating odds ratios and 95 % confidence interval (95%CI). P value <0.05 was considered significant. Epi-Info 3.5.1 and SPSS 13.0 programs were used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: 1036 adolescents were interviewed, of which 769 (74.2%) were sexually active. Sexually active adolescent girls had inferior schooling and lower income compared with adolescents who had not yet started sexual activity. 271 teenagers referred early pregnancy (95%CI 35.5%: 32.1-39.1). After adjustment for potential confounding variables, were identified as independently associated factors with pregnancy in adolescence: stable union, age over 17 years, sexual activity before 16 years old, inadequate schooling for age and family income lower than two minimum wages. CONCLUSION: Low socioeconomic conditions, inadequate schooling combined with sexual activity before 16 years old represent situations of vulnerability to teenage pregnancy in Goiânia and others cities in Goiás.
