Resumo: | Aging adults continue to be sexually active and are susceptible to sexually transmitted infections due to biological and behavioral changes, as well as structural aspects of society and health services. Few studies assess the prevalence of these infections in this population. The goal of this study was to investigate the seroepidemiological profile of Treponema pallidum infection in individuals aged 50 years or older living in a city in central Brazil. This is an observational, cross-sectional, analytical study, conducted in August 2017, in the City of Goiandira, Goiás, Brazil. A total of 339 individuals with 50 years or more residing in the city for at least six months participated in the study. All subjects were interviewed and tested for syphilis by Treponema rapid test. The reagent samples were subjected to VDRL. Of the total number of individuals recruited, the majority were female (60.2%), between 50 and 59 years old (42.2%), married (55.2%), practiced some type of religion (94.1%), self-declared mixed race (57.2%) and more than half (55.2%) had more than 5 years of education. A prevalence of 7.4% (n=25, 95% CI: 4.7-10.6) was estimated from the rapid test and 1.5% (n=5, 95% CI: 0.63-3.41) from the VDRL. In the multiple logistic regression analysis, history of incarceration (adjusted OR: 4.23) and sexual and/ or physical violence (adjusted OR: 3.29) were independently associated with syphilis positivity in the rapid test. The results of this study reinforce the need to include individuals aged 50 years or older in public policies for the early detection, treatment, and prevention of STIs, mainly syphilis. Improvements in Brazilian socioeconomic indicators and, consequently, in the living conditions of the Brazilian population in general, may reflect a reduction of syphilis incidence rates. |

Improvements in Brazilian socioeconomic indicators and, consequently, in the living conditions of the Brazilian population in general, may reflect a reduction of syphilis incidence rates. Submitted by Luciana Ferreira (lucgeral@gmail.com) on 2019-04-10T12:02:52Z No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Raphael Dionisio Vitorette - 2019.pdf: 5938767 bytes, checksum: 4b3484ea245b88e4d9851d965b3b066f (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5)Approved for entry into archive by Luciana Ferreira (lucgeral@gmail.com) on 2019-04-10T12:08:54Z (GMT) No. of bitstreams: 2 Dissertação - Raphael Dionisio Vitorette - 2019.pdf: 5938767 bytes, checksum: 4b3484ea245b88e4d9851d965b3b066f (MD5) license_rdf: 0 bytes, checksum: d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2019-04-10T12:08:54Z (GMT).
