Pensamento em combate: Tobias Barreto na aurora da república (1869-1889)

We analysed the intellectual trajectory of Tobias Barreto de Menezes (1839-1889) emphasizing the development of his idea of culture. After criticising the influence of French thought in Brazil nineteenth century, Tobias Barreto sought in German culture the necessary counterpoint to structure an alternative political project on the establishment of a Brazilian culture, at that time dependent on imported cultures that were mimicked from model countries. Thus, the literary works and critics that afforded the development of a cultural project that can be identified in his ideas and actions in public space on the major issues of his time (i.e. the abolition of slavery, republican movement, the critique of Empire, the reformulation of the law and the judicial branch) are the leitmotiv for a historicizing of intellectual conflicts in the transition from Empire to Republic. We intend in this way to analyse his thought and the relationship between the establishment of an intellectual and political project in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, what is related to creation and indissociable mythology of appropriations suffered in the first decades of the Republic by the heirs of the Recife School. Therefore, we propose to analyse the main texts of the referential master of the School, Tobias Barreto, mapping his intellectual formation and journey crossing authors, works, ideas and debates with the purpose of restoring the plots, tensions and projects that placed the idea of culture as a structuring element of these inherent relations to the effervescence of the Republican emergence.
