Resumo: This research consists of a study of practices, knowledge, skills inherent to pianists working in professional fields where at first sight reading competence is required. Its main objective is to investigate the formation of professional pianists and to understand how the learning process of the knowledge that enabled them to read expressively at first sight, that is, in high performance. For this, firstly through a bibliographic research we define reading at first sight and know the skills involved. In a documentary research we verified in the flowcharts of the Brazilian universities that offer music course as the theme of reading at first sight at the piano is contemplated. To gather data on the formation of selected pianists we conducted an exploratory research through a semi-structured interview. By sampling, we selected eleven Brazilian pianists who stand out on the national scene as excellent performers in first sight reading, of which seven participated in the research. The results indicate that the formation of these pianists has in common the acquisition of competences in an empirical way, also through experimentation, the means of musical coexistence and influences that they had in the initial phase of learning and the opportunity to work. Moreover, within the field of formal study, it was noticed that everyone benefited from the following aspects: how the traditional piano repertoire was approached, the possibility of playing chamber works, the technical-interpretative development and the theoretical knowledge.

Tem como objetivo principal investigar a formação de pianistas profissionais e entender como se deu o processo de aprendizagem dos saberes que os habilitaram para lerem à primeira vista expressivamente, ou seja, em alta performance. Para isso, primeiramente por meio de uma pesquisa bibliográfica definimos leitura à primeira vista e conhecemos as competências envolvidas. Em uma pesquisa documental verificamos nos fluxogramas das universidades brasileiras que oferecem curso de música como o tema da leitura à primeira vista ao piano é contemplado. Para levantar dados sobre a formação dos pianistas selecionados realizamos uma pesquisa exploratória por meio de uma entrevista semiestruturada. Por amostragem, selecionamos onze pianistas brasileiros que se destacam no cenário nacional como exímios performers em leitura à primeira vista, dos quais sete participaram da pesquisa. Os resultados apontam que a formação desses pianistas tem em comum a aquisição das competências de maneira empírica, também por meio de experimentações, os meios de convivência musical e influências que tiveram na fase inicial de aprendizado e a oportunidade de trabalho.
