“Viver é muito perigoso”: as diferentes noções de justiça em grande sertão: veredas

With this dissertation we propose the analysis of different ideas of justice set in motion in João Guimarães Rosa's novel Grande Sertão: Veredas (1956), as well as the tensions that arise from it. By justice we mean the set of laws, norms and codes that, at least in theory, ensure the equality of social procedures and make up a relative ethic of conduct. We defend the hypothesis that these ideas of justice obey the basic logic of the novel - which also accounts for the set of its formal structure, themes, motives and language - based on a continually moving nucleus. To achieve these goals, we propose a dialogue about the logic of narrative, based on the studies of Antonio Candido (1957, 1970), Walnice Nogueira Galvão (1972), Davi Arrigucci Jr. (1994) and José Antonio Pasta Júnior (1999). . We then discuss how literary experience and social perception intersect and articulate, outlining a torn nation image as suggested by Willi Bolle (2004). Finally, the approach of Guimarães Rosa's novel, through indirect and fictional ways, with the Brazilian reality composes a study whose main object is the past and present of our democracy, its limits and challenges.
