Resumo: This article discusses the contributions that literature and semiotics can make to geographical analysis of gated communities, it specifically focuses on a literary text, Claudia Piñeiro's novel, The Widows of Thursdays. The analysis starts with the categories used in other academic papers which deal with gated communities as social spaces: status, comfort, nature and safety. Then, based on Greimas? semiotic theory, semionarrative structure of social space is identified, in order to reflect on how meaning is constructed. The above mentioned statement permits the development of a methodological proposal for the study of gated communities within a cultural geography perspective.
