Philosophy and the Gosystems Approach method in Physical Geography

Resumo: Given the dearth of theoretical work published by physical geographers on issues around epistemology and method, this paper discusses two main topics: first, some connections between Physical Geography and Philosophy and its relations with scientific thought; then, issues on method, methodology, and hierarchical levels of approach resorted to in the study of geosystems – the guiding perspective in this paper. The study drew on bibliographic research and took into account the Russian-Soviet view on geosystems in order to systematize and problematize the ideas developed by Physical Geography, with emphasis on its theoretical-methodological linkages. Subsequently, the study sought to articulate the historical context of development of general systems theory and geosystems theory, based on their conceptual and methodological particularities. A diachronic examination of the structuring and grounds of geosystems theory allowed establishing conceptual correlations in the field of Physical Geography in particular, considering its backgrounds in the history of scientific thought in general. Physical Geography.En raison de la rareté des travaux théoriques publiés par les géographes physiques sur des questions d’épistémologie et de méthode, cet article aborde deux sujets principaux: d’abord, quelques liens entre la géographie physique et la philosophie et ses relations avec la pensée scientifique; ensuite, des questions sur la méthode, la méthodologie et les niveaux hiérarchiques d’approche employées dans l’étude des géosystèmes – la perspective directrice de cet article. L’étude s’est appuyée sur des recherches bibliographiques et a pris en compte la vision russo-soviétiques des géosystèmes afin de systématiser et de problématiser les idées développées par la géographie physique, en mettant l’accent sur ses liens théoriques et méthodologiques. Par la suite, l’étude a cherché à articuler le contexte historique du développement de la théorie générale des systèmes et des géosystèmes sur la base de leurs particularités conceptuelles et méthodologiques. L’examen diachronique de la structuration et des fondements de la théorie des géosystèmes a permis d’en établir des corrélations conceptuelles dans le domaine de la géographie physique en particulier, compte tenu de ses antécédents dans l’histoire de la pensée scientifique en général. Géographie physique.Diante da escassez de trabalhos teóricos de geógrafos físicos sobre as questões de epistemologia e método, o presente artigo discute dois temas principais: primeiro, algumas ligações da Geografia Física com a Filosofia e suas relações com o pensamento científico; na sequência, as questões de método, metodologia e os níveis hierárquicos de abordagem empregadas no estudo dos geossistemas – perspectiva norteadora da presente proposta. Para a realização da pesquisa, efetuou-se levantamento bibliográfico, atendo-se ao ideário russo-soviético sobre o geosistema com o intuito de sistematizar e problematizar as ideias desenvolvidas pela Geografia Física, com destaque às suas filiações teórico-metodológicas. Em seguida, buscou-se articular o contexto histórico de desenvolvimento da teoria geral dos sistemas e dos geossistemas a partir de suas particularidades conceituais e metodológicas. O exame diacrônico da estruturação e dos fundamentos da teoria geossistêmica permitiu estabelecer correlações conceituais no âmbito da Geografia Física em particular, considerando seus antecedentes na história do pensamento científico em geral.
