Water security and conflicts over water in the municipality of Cristalina, state of Goiás

Resumo: The objective was to demonstrate how irrigation and hydroelectric power generation have generated conflicts over water in Cristalina, which started to rely on center pivot irrigation from the mid-1980s, taking the water situation to a critical level, which was increased by the installation of the Batalha Hydroelectric Power Plant. Based on geographic and statistical information from the MapBiomas project, the National Water Agency and state agencies, the socio-environmental conditions and impacts caused by the use of water in Cristalina were analyzed. It was found that in 2020 9.47% of the municipal territory was occupied by center pivots. The presence of the hydroelectric plant increased pressure on the environment and conflicts with rural producers. Despite the economic dynamism, the municipality has low social development. Capitalist interests have made it difficult to observe reasonable environmental limits for water use. Keywords: Irrigation. Center pivot. Water insecurity. Cristalina.

Cristalina.El objetivo fue demostrar cómo el riego y la generación de energía hidroeléctrica han generado conflictos por el agua en Cristalina. Esta localidad comenzó a depender del riego por pivote central a mediados de la década de 1980, lo que llevó la situación hídrica a un nivel crítico, que se agravó con la instalación de la Central Hidroeléctrica de Batalha. Con base en información estadística y geográfica del proyecto MapBiomas, así como datos proporcionados por la Agencia Nacional del Agua y organismos estatales, se analizaron las condiciones e impactos socioambientales ocasionados por el uso del agua en Cristalina. Se encontró que, en el año 2020, aproximadamente el 9,47% del territorio municipal estaba ocupado por sistemas de riego por pivote central. La presencia de la hidroeléctrica aumentó la presión sobre el medio ambiente y exacerbó los conflictos con los productores rurales. A pesar de su dinamismo económico, el municipio presenta un bajo nivel de desarrollo social. Los intereses capitalistas han dificultado la revisión de los límites ambientales razonables para el uso del agua. Palabras clave: Irrigación. Pivote central. Inseguridad del agua. A partir de informações geográficas e estatísticas do projeto MapBiomas, da Agência Nacional de Águas e de órgãos estatais analisaram-se as condições socioambientais e os impactos causados pelos usos da água em Cristalina. Verificou-se que em 2020 9,47% do território municipal eram ocupados por pivôs centrais. A presença da hidrelétrica aumentou a pressão sobre o ambiente e os conflitos com produtores rurais. Apesar da dinamicidade econômica o município apresenta baixo desenvolvimento social. Os interesses capitalistas tem dificultado a observação dos limites ambientais razoáveis para o uso da água.
