Resumo: The study was conducted at the UFMT Experimental Farm in Santo Antônio de Leverger, MT, from February to April and from July to September in 2004. The objective was to determine the botanical composition of the pasture, to identify the botanical composition of the diet of the cattle and to verify the similarities between the botanical composition of the diet and of the pasture. The pasture was evaluated by the dry-weight method, the botanical composition of the diet was determined by the micro histological technique and the similarity indices were calculated using the Kulcyznski´s formula. The Paspalum carinatum was the component the highest of the participation in the botanical composition of the pasture, independent of the season, which the Dicotyledons presented the highest participation in the rainy season. The P. carinatum and Andropogon selloanus constituted an important forage resource in the rainy season, while in the dry season the animals selected P. carinatum and Dicotyledons. The low indices of similarity had indicated high selective capacity of the animals and the botanical composition of the diet showed seasonality. The similarity index was higher in the rainy season, especially in April.  KEY WORDS: Botanical composition, microhistological technique seasonality, selectivity, similarity index.
