Contextually indexicalized linguistic-discursive proxemics: traces of (as)symmetry in teacher and student interaction

Resumo: It is at the interface between Interactional Sociolinguistics and Pragmatics, situated in a sociocognitive approach, that I aim to investigate as a Brazilian teacher and a foreign student, both social actors/actresses of the Engineering course of a public institution of higher education, evaluate their own uses linguistic-discursive that establish more/less symmetrical relationships, through proxemic mechanisms. Adopting a (micro)ethnographic perspective, I analyze five interactional excerpts resulting from semi-structured interviews with the student and the teacher. In summary, I find that the use of the first person, as a strategy to reduce the interlocutive distance, is perceived as favorable to the teaching and learning relationship.
