Resumo: From the beginning of his literary career, Pepetela has been concerned with the historical questions that involve the ethnic and cultural formation of Angola. Works such as The Glorious Family, Mayombe, and Lueji have as a primary focus the historical formation of the Angolan people and its relation to the present moment of the country. These are narratives that, by using the vehicle of non official historicism, have returned to their just place the facts and deeds of men disinherited by the colonial historiography, but recreated in literary space.

Suas obras, como A gloriosa família: o tempo dos flamengos e Mayombe e Lueji: o nascimento de um império, têm como enfoque principal a formação histórica do povo angolano e sua relação com o presente do seu país.
