Resumo: This study makes an analysis of the short-story "The Secret Cause", by Machado de Assis. Reminding the reader of the intense dramatic traits present in Machado's narratives, the author describes the double, mirror-like relation actor/audience established, in may instances, among the claracters. The study proves that, in spite of not being based upon dialogues, "The Secret Cause" has really well-defined dramatic characteristics.

Lembrando ao leitor as intensas características dramáticas pre­sentes nas narrativas de Machado, a autora descre­ve a relação dupla, especular, de ator/platéia que se estabelece entre os personagens em diversos momentos.
