Resumo: | The aim of this paper is to investigate stress maintenance in a corpus of finalstress words (also known as oxytone) in Portuguese. The corpus contains 10.494noun words with final stress and their respective phonetic transcriptions fromthe Houaiss Dictionary. We argue that there is a tendency to keep the finalstress as in their source language, especially Latin, ‘Tupi’, French, Arabic,Ioruba, English, Spanish, Greek and Concani. We also discuss the quality ofthe final element (if vowel, glide or consonant) and the connexion with thedocumented century of the lexical borrowing. |
