Resumo: | The article presents a study on auction of books ads published in Correio Mercantil (Rio de Janeiro – Brazil), between the years of 1848 and 1868. It presents a peculiar form of buying and selling books, the advertising strategies used by auctioneers and the presence of novels among the auctioned books. Furthermore, it analyses the social economic profile of the owners of books sold at auction and the main reasons that led them to dispose of their libraries. The purpose of this paper is to present a little-studied form of book trade, reflect on the possession of books in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and discuss the social placement of novels readers in the Imperial capital in the mid-nineteenth century. |

Se presenta esa forma de compra y venta de impresos, las estrategias publicitarias utilizadas por los subastadores y la presencia de novelas entre los libros subastados. Además, se analiza el perfil socioeconómico de los propietarios de los libros vendidos y las principales razones que los llevaron a deshacerse de sus bibliotecas. El propósito de este trabajo es presentar una forma poco estudiada del comercio de libros, reflexionar sobre la posesión de libros en Río de Janeiro (Brasil) y discutir la colocación social de lectores de novelas en la capital imperial en mediados del siglo XIX.O artigo traz um estudo sobre anúncios de leilão de livros realizados no Rio de Janeiro, entre 1848 e 1868. Apresenta-se essa forma de compra e venda de impressos, as estratégias publicitárias empregadas pelos pregoeiros e a presença de romances entre os títulos leiloados. Ademais, analisa-se o perfil socioeconômico dos proprietários de obras vendidas em hasta pública e os principais motivos que os levaram a desfazer-se de seus livros.
