Resumo: This article aims to present some considerations on two sonnets by the Portuguese poet Gomes Leal (1848-1921) – O astrólogo e O novo livro –, both from Claridades do Sul (1875), book consecrated by the critical tradition as his masterpiece. The poems address to recurring questions in the author’s work and can be read as an expression of feelings of decadence at the end of the century; at the same time, they work as a preparatory step for O Anticristo (1884-1886). The article also argues that the pessimistic prognosis in the sonnets can be read as a figuration of the poet’s trajectory.

Se considera que los poemas abordan cuestionamientos recurrentes en la obra de dicho autor, se articulan como expresión literaria del sentimiento de decadencia finisecular y operan simultáneamente como etapa de preparación y noticia de O Anticristo (1884-1886). Se argumenta que el pronóstico pesimista perceptible en los sonetos analizados pueden ser leídos como una figuración de la trayectoria existencial del poeta. O artigo pretende apresentar algumas considerações em torno de dois sonetos do poeta português Gomes Leal (1848-1921) – O astrólogo e O novo livro –, ambos constantes de Claridades do Sul (1875), livro que a tradição crítica consagrou como sua obra-prima. Entende-se que os poemas abordam questionamentos recorrentes na obra do referido autor, articulando-se como expressão literária do sentimento de decadência finissecular e operando simultaneamente como etapa preparatória e notícia de O Anticristo (1884-1886).
