Resumo: | This work aims at analyzing briefly the Argive mothers’ mourning lamentation in the chorus of Euripides’ Suppliants, and verifying how images and meanings of this lamentation built in the original text can be reconstructed in its translation into Brazilian Portuguese. For this, we have translated the parodos’ play (v. 42-86), as well as the excerpt between verses 798 and 836, in which mourning and lamentation are more visible. As starting point, we have considered the employment of the words thrḗnos, góos and kommós in Greek Literature in order to develop the analysis of the lamentation in the aforementioned play. We are mainly based on Alexiou (2002) and Loraux (1994).In the end, we conclude that lexical choices are what insures the perception of the meanings and images from the original text to the translated one through theanalysis of scenic elements. |

This work aims at analyzing briefly the Argive mothers’ mourning lamentation in the chorus of Euripides’ Suppliants, and verifying how images and meanings of this lamentation built in the original text can be reconstructed in its translation into Brazilian Portuguese.
