Resumo: In this paper I analyze some principles (and their practice) that guide the Portuguese translator Lima Leitão, who translated all works of Vergil before the publication of the famous Virgilio Brasileiro (1858) by the Brazilian Manuel Odorico Mendes. In order to illustrate Leitão’s general practice, I focus on a passage of his translation of the Aeneid, whose edition goes back to 1819, before the first edition of Mendes’ Eneida Brasileira (1854). I analyze briefly, in the translation of the Laocoon episode, Lima Leitão’s vocabulary and the way he deals with the sounds and the expressive word-order of the original. As both translations mentioned have much in common, I compare them occasionally, by pointing out similitudes and differences between them. As final thoughts, I express the hope that Vergil’s translations by Lima Leitão may receive the samecritical and editorial attention that Mendes’s ones have received in recent times.
