Resumo: This paper presents some results of a historycal study on the concept of ‘stylistics’ (and its relation with those of ‘figure’ and ‘trope’) in Portuguese normative grammars traditionally used in Brazilian schools. It was taken as starting point the space occupied by the theme in grammars and its ancient roots. Therefore, grammars from Western Antiquity were resorted, which will also serve as necessary documental material to comprehend and historicize the concepts of figure and trope, rarely discerned from each other in modern grammars.
