Mathematical Places in Malba Tahan’s Tales

Resumo: Malba Tahan is a character-author who was famous for his tales set in Arab settings, many of which have mathematical elements, making him one of the first Brazilian writers to bring literature and mathematics together. In this article, four tales are analyzed by us: The tale of the camels; The tale of the sisters and the sale of apples; The tale of truth and lies; and The tale of the division of the kingdom, which can be found in the books The book of Aladdin, 1st edition, and The man who calculated, 8th edition, both published in 1943 by the publisher Getúlio Costa. The guiding question of the tales analysis process is how and which mathematic elements arise and are approached on Malba Tahan’s tales? In the analysis process we sought to identify and understand which mathematical elements appear in the texts in an explicit or implicit way, in other words, which mathematical places emerge in the construction of narratives, in order to better understand the articulation between literature and mathematics that characterize such texts.

Neste artigo analisamos quatro contos: O conto dos camelos; O conto das irmãs e da venda das maçãs; O conto da verdade e da mentira; e O conto da divisão do reino, localizados nos livros O livro de Aladim, 1ª edição, e O homem que calculava, 8ª edição, ambos publicado em 1943 pela editora Getúlio Costa. A questão que norteou o processo de análise dos contos é como e quais elementos matemáticos emergem e são abordados em contos de Malba Tahan?
