Perspectivas sobre a morte em pacientes com doença renal crônica e seus cuidadores familiares: um olhar sobre a relação com a saúde mental e o suporte social

Introduction: Chronic kidney disease consists of a context of losses for the patient, such as the loss of health and life that is shortened with the evolution of the disease, autonomy, social relationships, among others. Losses are also experienced by family members who suffer from the overload and limitations imposed by the care provided. This reality corresponds to processes of elaboration of losses and mourning that are experienced, by patients and family members, in an overlapping and constant way. Objective: to assess perspectives on death and correlate it with aspects of mental health and social support. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study with patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing dialysis and their families at the University Hospital of the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (HU/UFJF) in the city of Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais. The instruments used were: Sociodemographic and health questionnaire, the Quality of Life Questionnaire (SF-36); Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Perceived Social Support Scale (SPSS), Fatigue Pictogram (PF), Lipp Stress Symptom Inventory (ISSL) and Brief Perspectives on Death Scales (EBPM). For the statistical analysis, the variables were described as mean, standard deviation, median or frequency according to their characteristic. Pearson or Spearman correlation was performed, considering p<0.05. SPSS 17.0 statistical software. Results: There was a correlation between perspectives on death and aspects of quality of life, social support and stress. Discussion: Perspectives on death may be related to aspects of mental health and general quality of life of patients with chronic kidney disease and their families. Conclusion: it is essential to address perceptions about death, as well as to outline specific and interdisciplinary care strategies to improve the mental health and quality of life of patients and family caregivers in nephrology.
