Basic human needs affected in cancer patients: an integrative literature review

Introduction: Nursing is a science whose care has as methodological framework the Nursing process. This is structured in five steps, the first of which is data collection. In this stage, the real or potential problems that can be addressed by the nurse are identified. Objective: Identify the existing scientific productions on the signs and symptoms that indicate changes in human needs in cancer patients undergoing outpatient chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: Descriptive studies of integrative literature review. We included articles published in national and international literature that focused on the study of the construction and validation of data collection instruments for nursing. Results: Twenty-one publications out of a total of 3,039 were part of the final study sample. 107 empirical indicators were identified that represent the signs and symptoms that indicate changes in basic human needs in patients undergoing cancer treatment. Of these, 64 (59.81%) referred to indicators of assessment of psychobiological needs, 40 (37.38%) to indicators of assessment of psychosocial needs, and 3 (2.81%) to indicators of assessment of psychospiritual needs. Conclusion: The identification of these indicators will serve as a framework for the construction of a nursing data collection instrument. It is expected that its use will allow the nurse to assess the needs of cancer patients in outpatient antineoplastic therapy.
