Autism spectrum disorder and occurrence of neoplasms

Introduction: Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is a polygenic neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by behavioral symptoms, such as impaired social and communication interactions and repetitive behaviors at varying levels. Cancer is a pathology of great morbidity and mortality, characterized by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells, the origin of which derives from mutations in the DNA sequence. Interestingly, the human genome sequencing revealed extensive overlap in 138 risk genes for ASD and cancer, suggesting that the increased risk of cancer in individuals with ASD may have a significant genetic basis. Objective: To report two cases of cancer occurrence in patients with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). Case Reports: Case 1: male patient, brown, 2 years and 3 months, with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and ASD, treated with chemotherapy, progressing to death. Case 2: male patient, white, 33-year-old and 3-month-old patient with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and ASD, treated with chemotherapy, progressing to recovery. Conclusion: The two cases described occurred in patients with ASD, male and who presented hematological neoplasms, giving visibility to the association between ASD and neoplasms.
