Prevalence of oral breathing syndrome in public school children on Juiz de Fora - MG

Resumo: The Mouthbreathing Syndrome is a somatory of characteristics that affect the subjects that presents mouth breathing (MB). Knowing the prevalence of this condition in the population helps to take preventive and curative attitudes from the governmental health area. The cross sectional study was conducted in Juiz de For a city (Minas Gerais), analyzing 649 schoolchildren from 6 to 12 years old. After duly authorized to participate in the study, were submitted to dental and speech evaluation. The prevalence of mouth breathing in the sample was 59.5%. The variables associated with the detection of MB were: male sexy, and posture of tongue. The MB increased the frequency of findings like: sleeping rough, swallowing during the night, hypertrophic gingiva and anterior open bite. Multiple fields of health’s child are involved in the Mouthbreathing Syndrome, requiring the timely multiprofessional intervention to its detection and correction.

Conhecer a prevalência desta condição na população contribui para que sejam tomadas atitudes preventivas e curativas por parte dos órgãos de saúde governamentais. Foi conduzido um estudo transversal na cidade de Juiz de Fora, analisando 649 escolares de 6 a 12 anos. Após devidamente autorizados para participarem do estudo, foram submetidos a exames odontológicos e fonoaudiológicos. A prevalência de respiração bucal na amostra foi de 59,5%. As variáveis associadas à detecção da RB foram sexo masculino, dorso da língua alto e língua anteriorizada. A RB aumentou a freqüência de achados de: sono agitado, baba noturna, gengiva hipertrófica e mordida aberta anterior.
